The current Department for Seed Production and Processing is established within the Agricultural Institute Osijek in 1961. At that time, first bigger storage facilities were built for organized and controlled seed production of the main field crops. Previously, all seed production was processed and stored by the seed company "Oranica" Osijek. The cooperation with "Oranica" was further continued because initially built capacity was unsatisfied for at that time produced amount of seed of the Agricultural Institute Osijek.
In that time (1961-1971) the Department led Stevo Krnić, B.Sc., and except him only a few technicians and warehousemen were employed. Bigger development of the Department has begun by development of the breeding departments, when their own cultivars and hybrids were created, approved and introduced in commercial production.
On the end of 1960’s and beginning 1970’s in the last century were created new and better varieties of wheat and first maize hybrids of the Agricultural Institute Osijek that have begun to sow on significant areas in the wide production in our country, and also was opened possibility for export of seed in Hungary and former countries of Soviet Union what was well exploited by the Institute. On these businesses was created a material basis that has enabled building of new capacities for reception, processing and storage of seed.
That business was significantly developed by M.Sc. Ðuro Matijašević, who led the Department from 1971 until 1980. In that period of time were built facilities with eight cells for reception of seeds (total seeds capacity of 800 t), then maize drier (cob capacity of 60 t), also significantly is developed organized seed production of cultivars and hybrids of the Agricultural Institute Osijek (OS-creations), and through it cooperation on seed production with agriculture-industrial combines and other participants in the production, processing and negotiation of seed on domestic and foreign market (Poslovna zajednica za sjemenarstvo, "Agroslavonija" Osijek, PPS Osijek and others from the former country).
At that time development of the Department and increased material basis of seed production has enabled the building of new Agricultural Institute on Tenje road (completely destroyed in the Patriotic war) as well as further building of seed processing capacities. Beside that, it’s important to remind that the Agricultural Institute Osijek through the Department for Seed Production and Processing was initiator of development and processing capacities expansion in Republic of Croatia ("Oranica" Osijek, Ratarstvo Hercegovac, VUPIK Vukovar, Ðakovština d.d., "Belje" PIK).
The Department’s head position of M.Sc. Matijašević has inherited M.Sc. Ivan Ðurkić, who led the Department until 1998 when he went on the minister deputy position and later minister position of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Republic of Croatia. M.Sc. Ðurkić was meritorious for further development of more quality work on the Department through staff strengthening, widen the Department’s activities, and great promotion of cultivars and hybrids created in the Agricultural Institute Osijek.
Thus, over 1981, the capacity of drier is expanded for addition 60 t of cobs in one partition, with possibility of drying other crops. One year later, there is built new building including working cabinets, laboratory for seed quality control, and one part for new storage capacities. At the present time, the Department for Seed Production and Processing works in this space.
Furthermore, in 1983, there is built the large bottom storage of 1000 m2. With this and earlier built storage capacities this is a basis of storage capacity on the Department. During the Patriotic war all storage capacities were hugely destroyed and significant resources were invested for their recovery for work, and right now pointed out possibility for further capacity increasing of the Department. For this great efforts invest current head of the Department M.Sc. Josip Šimenić, who leads the Department since 1998. Up to now, all plans and necessary documentation were made for building of new capacities for reception, drying, processing and seed storage of main field crops.
The role of seed production as special activity of the Agricultural Institute Osijek is very important for their entire work. Over the seed of own creations is the fastest way for affirmation of the breeding results in the field crops. Beside that, over the seed is materially valorized breeding work, and permanently provided a needed material resources for continual scientific work on the Agricultural Institute Osijek.
Therefore, the main activity or task of the Department is promotion, organization of production, processing and dispose of OS-cultivars and hybrids of the Agricultural Institute Osijek, what achieving through narrow cooperation with the breeding departments of the Agricultural Institute Osijek and agricultural enterprises which multiplying the seed as well as with the Institute for Seed and Seedlings Republic of Croatia.
Beside, the Department conducts different scientific researches from domain of seed and seed production due to introduction new methods for more efficient application of new technologies on area of production, seed control in field and seed processing. In connection with this, there is worked on modernization and expansion of the processing capacities. Perfection and staff training that are included in seed production are permanent through courses, symposiums, meetings etc. Also, a lot of work is done on promotion of certified quality seed for sowing because of yield increasing and decreasing of infected materials.
In present time, the Department is well staff equipped for all kind of commercial businesses as well as researches in seed production of all field crops on which breeding is conducted in the Institute. At the Department are employed 17 workers: 2 D.Sc., 2 M.Sc., 4 B.Sc. (2 are in front of M.Sc. finishing), and other are technicians and qualified workers.
Under inspection of the Department’s professionals are large areas of cultivars and hybrids created on the Agricultural Institute Osijek that are grown in Croatia and foreign countries (Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czeck Republic, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine).
Success in production and finding a market of cultivar’s and hybrid seed, creations of the Agricultural Institute Osijek, testify seed disposal that occupied areas of wheat about 55%, barley 70%, soybean 70%, alfalfa 90%, sunflower and maize 15%. Beside the breeders and seed producers, this success are contributed by numerous researches from other fields of research in the Institute like phytopathologists and agrotechnicians as well as quality management of the seed production.
On the end, have to know that is needed to invest in seed production a large work and efforts that are difficult to express regarding amount of produced and disposed seed that is realized under the Department’s organization. However, quality seed production significantly contributes to improvement entire research work in the Agricultural Institute Osijek, and further entirely to agriculture development in Republic of Croatia.
