The Department for Breeding and Genetics of Industrial Plants was established in 1955 within the Department for Improvement of Agriculture (today’s the Agricultural Institute Osijek) named the Department for Industrial and Forage Plants. The purpose of the Department’s establishment was to improve production of the main industrial and forage crops in the areas of Eastern Croatia. The scope of initial work was small in staff (engineers, technicians and workers) as well as in facilities and equipment. Majority of activities were focused on the agrotechnical researches in order to meet the demands of commercial production. In the first period the head of the Department was Marko Budišić, B.Sc. In the beginning of 1960’s the Department was divided in two new departments: the Department for Industrial Plants and Seed Production, and the Department for Forage Crops and Seed Production, which have continued activity within the Agricultural Institute Osijek, whereas the program of work on sugar beet was excluded in new established independent institution named the Institute for Sugar Beet. In the period 1967-2009, Department for Industrial Plants and Seed Production was managed by D.Sc. Marija Vratarić. From 2010, head of the Department is D.Sc. Aleksandra Sudarić.

By D.Sc. Marija Vratarić coming on head position of the Department started to implement staff strengthening in the Department, which in 1993 was renamed the Department for Breeding and Genetics of Industrial Plants. Soybean, sunflower and winter rape breeding programs were developing gradually, and programs concerning less important crops (flax, hemp, castor oil) were abandoned. Development of breeding work resulted in creation and recognition of own cultivars and hybrids, whose commercialization through seed production has made a material basis for more qualitative scientific-professional work in the Department.

Scientific-professional programs were partially sponsored by the SIZ IV for Science of the Republic of Croatia from 1974 until 1990, and by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Croatia from 1991 up to now. Besides breeding programs, in the period from 1970 to 1990, different agrotechnical projects partially financed by the large enterprises and responding to the demands of commercial production were conducted with soybean, sunflower and winter rape. Therefore, it is free to say that genetic improvement of soybean cultivars and sunflower hybrids has been continuous in the Department from that time up to present. Both breeding programs were among the largest in this region with considering impact on the wide range production.

Generally, the breeding work on soybean has significantly intensified in the past 30 years. Likewise, the results of soybean research work at the Agricultural Institute Osijek are among the most meritorious for introduction of soybean to commercial production in the Republic of Croatia as in the areas of former country. Scientists and experts of the Department, in cooperation with other institutes and faculties in the country, were the holders of soybean development program on federal, republic and regional level. It is especially important to emphasize the Department’s role in organizing scientific-professional soybean meetings in Osijek in 1975 on federal level, and in the period from 1980 until 1991 on regional level.

During the Patriotic war, the Department as well as the whole Agricultural Institute Osijek had terrible losses in the staff as well as material damages in facilities (all buildings and laboratories were completely destroyed), equipment and breeding materials. Winter rape breeding material was almost completely lost as it remained in the field and in storage that were on the front line in 1991. Hence the breeding of winter rape crop couldn’t recover since despite good results before the war (many published papers, two recognized winter rape varieties). At the same time it was decided that further researches in the Department should be focused on soybean and sunflower breeding, including the production of pre-basic seed.

The main objective of the breeding is continuous development of new and better soybean and sunflower genotypes for wide production using adequate breeding methods with constant pursuance and application of modern breeding trends. Therefore, application of molecular markers for determination of soybean genotypes as well as for detection of fungi pathotypes was included in the soybean breeding programme. Total annual amount of the soybean breeding material is between 5 000 and 6 000 accessions (of which about 400 promising lines are tested in comparative trials). Sunflower breeding material is between 2 000 and 3 000 accessions (of which about 200 hybrid combinations are tested in comparative trials). In addition to breeding, the Department’s staff works on the production of pre-basic seed with the aim of maintaining genetic purity and uniformity of soybean cultivars and sunflower lines. Besides breeding and seed production, different agrotechnical researches are conducted, primarily for giving recommendations for commercial production. Furthermore, common research projects on these crops are being realized in cooperation with the Faculty of Agriculture Osijek, the Faculty of Agriculture Zagreb - Department for Microbiology, and the University of Guelph in Canada. Nevertheless, certain business and bilateral cooperation exists between the Department and Slovakia, Hungary, Italy, France, Turkey, Albania, Iran, Kazakhstan and etc.

On the Department’s projects have worked 6 D.Sc. (1 is employed in Agrochemical laboratory), 1 M.Sc., 1 technologist, 1 scientific novice, 3 technicians and 5 qualified workers. Beside the Institute staff, the projects include many consultants from the collaborating institutions. All scientific staff has good professional knowledge, as well as the knowledge of foreign languages and informatics.

The result of previous work on soybean breeding in the period from 1976 to 2010 is the recognition of 41 cultivars within 00 - II maturity group, 3 of which are recognized in Hungary. The recognized soybean cultivars are sown on large areas and they significantly contribute the increasing and improving of wide soybean production in the country. In 2009, soybean cultivars of the Agricultural Institute Osijek occupied 65-70% of total areas under soybean in the Republic of Croatia (50 000 ha), while cultivars Ika and Podravka 95 were leading in yield and areas and could well compete with other domestic and foreign soybean cultivars.

In the frame of the sunflower breeding program, 16 hybrids were recognized, of which two in Slovakia (Fakir and Olio) and one in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Apolon). In the period from 1990 to 1995, the sunflower hybrids of the Agricultural Institute Osijek occupied 90% of total sunflower areas in sow structure of the Republic of Croatia. In the present time, introduction of foreign sunflower hybrids to our country reduced that percentage significantly, although their value isn’t really better in comparison to domestic hybrids.

In the last 30 years, the scientists of the Department have published over 250 scientific and professional papers including Master and Doctoral thesis, seven books, many studies, and have edited 11 Proceedings from soybean meetings held in Osijek. Furthermore, 90 papers are indexed in referral databases (CC, CAB, Agris, Agricola). The results of researches were regularly presented at symposiums in our country and at many international and world symposiums, as well as in direct contacts with soybean and sunflower producers. During the past period of time, some scientists of the Department were awarded for their contribution with significant scientific and professional laurels.
