The Department of Agricultural Technique and Melioration is the successor to the Department for Agricultural Engineering. The purpose behind the creation of the Department was to advance the agricultural technology in the area of main crop farming cultures. After the relocation of the Agricultural Institute Osijek to Tenjska cesta (1976), the Department for Agricultural Engineering had a modern laboratory at its disposal, as well as established scientists who were applying methods for the analysis of soil fertility and the content of more important nutrients in plants. It was also setting up numerous agricultural engineering field experiments, which were the basis for the product range and production engineering. Considering the significant progress in the activities of the Department, the following specialised sections of the department developed: plant nutrition, general crop farming, agricultural reclamation, and agricultural technology. The head of the Department during its expansion (in the 1980s) was prof.dr.sc. Ivan Mušac, and the Department employed prominent scientists and experts: prof.dr.sc. Vlado Kovačević, prof.dr.sc. Ivan Žugec, prof.dr.sc. Ivan Jurić, prof.dr.sc. Stjepan Mađar, and dr.sc. Mile Čuljat.

Today the Small Processing facility is built and equipped with very modern seed processing equipment, and its main function is: processing, treatment, and packaging of high categories of seeds, pre-basic and basic seeds of self-fertilising cultures (winter wheat, barley, soybean, alfalfa, red clover, and pea), and the self-fertilising lines of corn and sunflower, mostly for the purposes of the plant breeding department. Small Processing has been a part of the Department of Agricultural Engineering and Reclamation since 1989 and the head of the department is dr.sc. Marko Josipović.

The primary activities of the Department are focused at the proper functioning of Small Processing and scientific and professional work in the area of agricultural engineering and reclamation: the creation and revision of surveys, studies, and projects regarding drainage and irrigation, setting up field experiments in the mentioned area, realisation of scientific projects and projects in cooperation with the business sector, publishing scientific and professional publications, realisation of contracts with the business sector, continuous research with the goal of improving soil properties at the Institute, efficient irrigation at the Institute’s agricultural land, implementing agricultural engineering measures by following basic sustainability principles, taking care of construction, maintenance, and modernisation of the irrigation system at the Institute’s land, research into the efficiency of irrigation of agricultural cultures specifically created at the Institute, development of the research methods and the development of agricultural machinery and integrated power units, testing various machines and machine systems, calculating the total mechanisation of processes in agricultural production, and creating programmes and projects for acquiring equipment for family-run agricultural farms.

The scientists from the Department have published over 150 scientific and professional papers, three chapters in books, seven studies, reviewed over twenty projects (concepts, preliminary, and main designs) for irrigation systems. More than 50 scientific papers have been indexes in reference databases (CC, CAB, Agris, Agricola). The research results have been shown at symposiums domestically and abroad.
